2 out of 5 stars Why all the positive reviews?   April 14, 2010

I don't see why so many people are giving this positive reviews, I guess my expectations were just too high for such a cheap price on an instrument.
I made a dumb move and sold my old bass which was $600. I missed the bass and decided to buy this as a cheap alternative so I could at least practice, plus I thought it'd be cool to try an acoustic. Unfortunately like the majority of items Ive bought, The more money paid the better quality received.

My first impressions upon looking at it were good, A normal sized bass, completely polished. When I examined it better I noticed it had some minor blemishes where the neck meets the frame, some small paint chips on the higher frets, Also the wooden piece on the body that holds the strings was unpolished which looks a little cheaper. Still the blemishes are small and the majority of people wouldn't notice them, especially if they're just watching you play. So the look of the bass is about a 4/5

When I started playing it, I was immediately disappointed. The tone wasn't as professional as I'd hoped, It sounds a bit cheap and boring. The worst thing to me is the tension of the strings are too loose. Not so loose that there flopping around but definitely loose enough that its going to annoy a bassist with some experience. A first timer may actually prefer this but your better off in the long run having a stronger tension in the strings. You'll move faster and it'll feel and sound better. I bought new strings thinking maybe the manufacture could only afford really cheap strings with this model. But after paying $20 for new strings and trying them on it makes no difference. The tones slightly different but they're still lose and it sounds cheap.

This bass won't appeal to the majority of people. If you or your child is new at bass I can understand the attraction to this bass because of the price. Its half the price of most starter models and you don't need to buy an amp, so for a small minority of people it might work. For a brand new musician this might suffice for 6 months or so. Its sturdy enough to practice on. The only thing to consider is if the sound quality isn't as good, you may not be as encouraged to play.

It might seem like I'm being harsh, maybe I am considering the price I suppose its nice that an option like this is available.
If your a bassist with some experience who is tempted to buy this as a cheap acoustic for some variety, or a guitarist who wants a bass, Don't buy this.
It's worth forking over $200-$300 for a starter bass that is more fun to play and has a good solid sound that's worth using and practicing on.

5 out of 5 stars I use it everyday.   March 21, 2010

This is an excellent bass and it's ACOUSTIC!!
I spent quite a few years without a bass but always loved it above other instruments. This purchase was my return to the bass guitar and I have used it every day since it arrived. My 4 year old niece became obsessed with it and wanted her own little version for Christmas. My only problem with it was it didn't come with a case when I bought it from ebay. Perhaps Amazon is different, I haven't checked. Like I said this is my first bass in a while and I am essentially a beginner so I can't speak to the bass' sound compared to other higher quality instruments but believe me, for the price it looks fantastic and it sounds sweet enough for me. You'll be thumping away on it in no time and because it's acoustic/electric you don't have to plug it in to hear yourself. Many people have been impressed when I walk into the room with this blue baby.

As someone who has been playing bass for close to 30 years, I would say I know a thing or two about basses, and at the price I can honestly say I wasn't expecting much, but I was very pleasantly surprised! first the bad, followed by the good.

The bad: some sloppy work on a couple of the high frets which i will probably have to sand at a later date, a few paint blemishes to the fingerboard, it does not have a neck joint strap button which I will have to add (like many acoustics the strap is meant to be tied to the neck) and a few blemishes in the paint on the rear.

The good: has a really nice tone, good balance to the instrument, neck has decent action without needing adjustment, electronics sound good and came with battery, comes with pick, cord, and hex for adjusting neck, just walking the hallways getting a feel for it I got a lot of compliments. it really is a pretty acoustic bass.

All in all when you figure that you can have this for less than $105 shipped to your door your really can't go wrong. Sure it isn't going to be perfect or blemish free at such a low price, but if you are like me and want a good sounding instrument to carry around and play the occasional unplugged set you really will be surprised at what you get for the price. I will have no qualms setting this besides my Fenders and Washburn on stage and firing it up for some acoustic numbers. For the price you really can't go wrong with this!
